Sound that has its place in the space.

Spatial audio is a sound design technique in which individual voices, musical elements and effects are positioned in specific locations within a space. The listener thus perceives not only what is heard, but also where the sound is coming from, just as in everyday life.

With conventional sound reinforcement, the aim is to provide even coverage of the auditorium with sound coming primarily from a single direction – the stage. Spatial audio adds localisation to this. Sound design treats the auditorium as a three-dimensional space and assigns a specific position to each sound. A voice can thus be heard from the location where the action is taking place, and sound effects can move through the space around the audience.

Where spatial audio is used at events

In theatre and immersive performances, it draws the audience right into the action. At conferences and congresses, it helps to naturally link the voice with the speaker on stage. At gala evenings, exhibitions and brand experience events, it creates an atmosphere and subtly guides visitors’ attention.

Spatial audio is often combined with directional sound and lighting design, which are synchronised with one another using timecode.
