The role and basic functions of a mixing console

A mixing console is an electronic device whose main function is to sort and adjust input signals from various sources and levels, and subsequently combine them into a final output for recording, broadcasting, or further processing. A sound engineer typically operates the mixing console.

Operation of the Mixer

A mixing console is defined as a device that has at least one, but usually several, inputs from microphones, electronic musical instruments, or audio players, and at least one output. The signal from each input can be routed to any output in any desired proportion.

The maximum number of inputs and outputs is theoretically unlimited, but practically it is limited by the size of the device and the expected usage. Mixing consoles are most commonly produced with the number of inputs and outputs as powers of two (1, 2, 4, 8, etc.). A mixing console with one input and several outputs can also be referred to as a signal distributor or distribution amplifier.
