Flickering
Flickering (flashing or shimmering)
is an undesirable phenomenon in which rapid changes in the brightness of the LED screen. It may not always be visible to the naked eye, but it can manifest itself quite clearly when filming with a camera or taking photographs. In event production, flickering on the camera typically manifests as:
– a flickering or pulsating image,
– dark or light horizontal stripes,
– scrolling bands moving across the image,
– unstable brightness or exposure of the LED screen.
What is the most common cause of this in LED screens? It is particularly important to distinguish between:
– LED screen refresh rate, e.g. 1,920 Hz, 3,840 Hz, 7,680 Hz,
– PWM brightness control for LED modules,
– camera settings, particularly shutter speed/shutter angle and frame rate,
– a mismatch between the camera’s timing and that of the LED processor/receiving cards.
