A media server is a computing device or application software that stores digital media—video, audio, or images—and makes them accessible over a network. It is often used in conjunction with home theater systems, providing easy access to a wide range of media. A media server can be a server, computer, network-attached storage, or any other device with such storage capabilities.

Uses of a Media Server

A media server is a device that stores and shares media. It is responsible for the hardware and software aspects of successful data storage and retrieval, as well as for sharing media files and information. Any device with network access and sufficient bandwidth for sharing and storing media can serve as a media server.

Commercial media servers function as aggregators of information—covering video, audio, photographs, books, and other types of media—essentially anything that can be accessed via a network.
